I'm a recent graduate of EMU. I really feel that your EMU experience really depends on what you did while you were at the school (and I think that's true of everywhere). I was a student in the biology department and graduated with university and departmental honors. I started doing research as a freshman (something that was unheard of when I interviewed for doctoral programs) and even though my general education coursework was quite easy, the biology/chemistry/physics/math that I took were all quite challenging. EMU did a great job of preparing me, I was accepted right after graduation into a doctoral program at NYU (almost all the other Ph.D. students here have a masters degree). When pfizer was still around in Ann Arbor, they preferred to hire EMU grads from bio and chem because they had much more laboratory knowledge (we're taught by profs and not TAs) and most of us have more lab and research experience.

I feel that the faculty at EMU are the university's greatest asset. My profs cared a lot about my success and I even became quite good friends with them and still keep in touch.

Ypsilanti has ups and downs. I lived on-campus for 3 years (1 year in Wise and 2 years in The Village) and I thought they were good experiences (the FYC and Towers totally suck, avoid if you can). My 4th year I lived in Ypsi off campus. I always hated walking home at night, I never felt very safe doing that alone. Most of Ypsi is really shitty. The only good parts include the actual campus, the area just off campus where most of the faculty live, and Depot Town. I LOVE Depot Town. I can't believe that I live in NYC but miss that place like crazy. I'm so looking forward to coming back to MI for Christmas and having a drink at The Corner Brewery and eating some beer-battered pickles at Sidetracks.

I feel like EMU is a great community. Everyone has always been quite friendly to me (except the math department office, they were mean). One of the great thing about being a member of the Honors College is if I needed something, they'd always do it for me so I was never given 'the run around' (bc the bureaucracy at EMU is pretty ridiculous, that happens to a bunch of people)

A couple of things that could be better. I feel that EMU has good school spirit, but the athletics suck. Most of us felt that they should just cut the football team, they never win and no one goes to see them (more people show up just to see the marching band…because they rock!). Also most people go home on the weekend, so if you can't leave, you'll be pretty bored.

Some things to make sure to do: Eat at Abe's, Hang out at The Corner, check out Sidetracks (beer-battered pickles and one of the best rated burgers in the US), eat a pizza from Aubree's, check out Tower Inn during happy hour (crazy big beer for cheap).

So I can at least tell you EMU is good for bio, chem, history, poli sci, communications, theater, music education, linguistics, anthropology, and english. EMU is also well known for their education program, you'll be able to teach pretty much anywhere. The psych program (if you don't want to be a clinical psychologist) could definitely be better and I really don't known anything about the other departments.
