I'm transferring out of here soon so that should influence the rest of this

In the summer of 2007 I came here looking for change. I'm from Vermont, and I was eager to see other parts of the world. I had wanted to go south, for the history, for some time. I had wanted to "walk" the battlefields, "see" the sites, etc. Mary Washington appeared to be everything I wanted. History, southern, good academics, everything. What can I say, I was an idealist stupid high schooler who thought he knew a lot but didn't know shit. I stupidly researched little else throughout the process, which I can especially lament now, sitting in this desolate "dorm' of mine. Now coming from the north north I knew it would be a change. I knew that southerners were more conservative, and yes, I am a democrat, but I'm open minded to different views. I thought that this conservatism would not roll over into other aspects of life on campus. I was wrong…

During the summer I was advised meagerly on what classes I should take, which began to worry me. Worse of all, they practically make you do all the work of registering classes yourself. Now yes, they do have a "list" of classes you need to take but it is both confusing, and coming straight out of high school, frustrating. When I called for help, the "helpers" always seemed condescending, like I was wasting their time which IS their damn job. So I went in "registered" into M' Dub with little knowledge of any structure or purpose.

Ah yes…Freshmen orientation, more like let's ditch the freshmen orientation. My advisor pretty much did nothing but show off how cool he was to us. He said things to make us shiver in our shoes, and ditched us like after the first day. Now I always envisioned Freshmen orientation as a kind of jumpstart. You're excited, meeting tons of people, and so on. All I got out of orientation was akwardness, bitterness, and boredom.

Anyways as a once optimistic, outgoing, friendly, normal open minded Vermonter I dismissed these signs, telling myself it would improve. I made multiple attempts to reach out to people over the months, but they all turned sour. The people here are really hard to understand. Many of them are extremely cliquey(like to the point where after a couple of weeks they will make no attempt to even acknowledge other people), close minded, socially conservative, shallow, very immature, materialistic, and snobbish. I was once a good simple person who valued kindness, creativity, and diversity. There are definitely "non-conformist" hippies on this campus, but they're cliquey too! Haha, anyways there is a clear division between different groups, one that few people transcend. You can't be in the middle like me. The worst part is that the students are so good at making you feel unwanted that they don't even have to say it to you! There have been many times where I've said hello to people I knew and had them walk straight by me on the campus because they were with their "cool" friends and I wasn't. Stupid frivolous shit. Well this campus is not diverse at all. Yes, I have met some nice people, they definitely exist, but it seems like after talking to them for a while they get really boring, or you realize something about them which turns you off. The social scene is definitely the WORST part of this school.

The nightlife sucks. There are no clubs, dancing places, everything requires a car. The school activities are mostly lame, and few people come, or are enthusiastic about them. And some of the "real southerners" in the town will discriminate against you if you are from the college or especially in my case, from the North.

If you like partying don't go here. The parties are way big, stupid, and they often get either busted or people run out of beer. I was never that into it anyway, but still.

Some good things. Tha academics are good here. My teachers all seem very nice and intelligent. However many of the stupid ignorant idiots in my classes still ruin the experience. I also like the Hyperion Coffee shop in downtown Fredericksburg, cool place.

Now I'm just a regular guy, I'm not a hippie or a prep or whatever, but don't come here unless you're a shallow ignorant fool, or want to be around them. Best of luck in you college hunting, but don't come here.
