When I first went to UMaine - Orono several years ago I thought I would take a womens studies class. I can't remember the course name or the instructor because it was a while ago but she was rude.

The first day of class was filled with nothing but male bashing. I'd understand if she wanted to discuss womens sufferage and pin point objectively the long strugles of women, but this was simple male bashing "I hate Mr. Man" sort of attitude.

She asked the class to let her know if anyone was dropping her course because they felt uncomfortable. I raised my hand because I wanted to be polite and let her know I was leaving (and not just storm out). She looked at me funny and then laughed and said

You don't need my permission to leave this class
ha ha ha ha And laughed at me in front of the entire class. As if to portray me as some simple minded man child.

I felt insulted because she saw a man, a person she hated. She didn't understand that I have a lot of respect for women, in fact I looked up to my own mother as a pillar or strength. I was someone who admired Princes Dianna back in the 90s for her profound work in the community. But no, this UMaine instructor only saw a man. A man she had contempt for.

I walked right into her little verbal "set up". She knew if she Male Bashed enough and then made the offer to "let her know if we wanted to leave" that one of the men in her class might actually raise their hands. So I walked right into that one.

I'm more for being educated and not using a classroom as a personal war against the opposite sex. I noticed way too many Professors, Instructors, and TAs all have their little agendas and spiteful views of the world hidden behind a fake smile and phoney friendly persona at UMaine.

I've caught so many professors at the college twisting facts and fudging data. When I go to look up the stats myself they are different. I had one professor give us a bunch of Stats to make the republicans look bad but when I asked her to show us where she got her data from she got very defensive. I looked up her figures and found that she had inflated the data. By the way I was Democrat at the time so for those reading this thinking I was Republican - you are wrong. However, these days I identify as Independent. UMaine Liberals spooked me too much to remain a democrat.

Anyway, the professor that tried to belittle me in class and numberous others at UMaine pretty much crushed my spirit to obtain a better degree. By my 2nd year I was on Anti Anxiety medications to cope with that abusive place. And if wasn't limited to the professors. A lot of self absorbed students go to UMaine that can't seem to get into their first choice colleges. Alcohol, drugs, pot, sexual problems, and an array of other emotional problems are constantly swept under the carpet and kept quiet at UMaine. Just last summer 2008 some Public Saftey Officers were arrested in a campground in Mid Maine for druken disordaly conduct and a theft of a golf cart that they raced around the campground. The UMaine Public Safety officers resisted arrest and acted bulligerant, unknown drugs where found on their possession… HOWEVER, all this was kept out of local news papers and out of the TV news. The usual cover up. But if a student is needed to be held up as an example Public Safety is the first one on the phone to call the local papers. Hypocrisy!

Anyway, professors that can't teach or wont, drunk staff and students, run down dorms, Asbestos in the dorms, and a high suicide rate (Maine as a state has a higher than average suicide rate), and other problems plague a campus that is in clear denial. Students in dorms are vicous rude and obnoxius but staff don't care so long as you don't damage campus property. Also we are being charged $200+ a year for a 25 million dollar recreation center even if we don't use it, while classrooms fall into disrepair - just so the campus can brag about a fitness center.

I should have known by the 1st or 2nd semester when the male bashing instructor tried to make me feel bad about myself by talking to me like a child that I should have run away screeming.

UMaine sucks! Unless you are one of those rude vicious types who thrive in such an environment, unless you are one of those "emotional vampires" who feed on others… or someone who is in extreme denial and can live in an happy state despite people constantly letting you down and lying to you.

If I could go back in time and never set foot at UMaine Orono Maine I would. I would go as far away as I possibly could.
