It's quite assumptive to think no one in the south, or auburn, can carry on an "intellectual conversation". If you're so smart, you should have done a little more research before you came to the university. |
I'm sure she did her research. That's just it though, the numbers look good on paper. When people tell me that aprox. 30% of people are in the Greek life, I would expect a lower number of people in that lifestyle. When people tell me that these people have 3.5 GPAs coming into the school, I think that they would have intelligence enough to talk to me on a subject that doesn't include alcohol, beer, or parties. It doesn't help that Auburn (along with most every group that tries to get people to join) takes all of these pictures and says all of these things that have you think 'Oh, what a nice place.' Furthermore, it's not like people WANT to hate their school. I think she would have chosen a different school had she known what she was getting into. I don't believe she thinks that everyone in the south is an idiot. I think she's expressing her frustration with the stereotypical southern mindset. Does everyone think like that? No. However, you know what image she is trying to portray simply by mentioning it. |
No doubt about it some folks are difficult or impossible to understand. I had a hell of a time understanding the southern accent. I went to Southern Union State Community College for a bit and talk about needing a translator Jez. One of the teachers sounded like Gomer Pyle on PCP. After getting the fourth teacher at SUSCC I couldn't understand. I packed my stuff and got the hell out of that region of the country and graduated elsewhere, screw that. |
Major: Undecided (This Major's Salary over time)
If you like the Southern lifestyle and nothing but, and feel like you fit the cookie cutter description of a Southern student who loves nothing but football, beer, and gossip, Auburn is the place for you. If you want to go to a school that will allow you to grow and express individual ideas, look elsewhere. It is all about who you know in Auburn, and if you are planning on meeting anyone on campus, you best get some recs for sororities or fraternities. Greek life is way bigger than the numbers would lead you to believe. And academically, the classes are decent, but the liberal arts college is HORRIBLE. They really do not care about their students at all and it is impossible to get a hold of the advisers. I love the south, but I am a smart girl, and I have not found anyone there that can carry on an intellectual conversation.
