High Point is not worth anyone's $30k a year. For an out of state student this school is extremely expensive and in no way, shape, or form do you get an education worth that much. I spent a year at this "college" which is basically just a big playground for rich kids who just want to party and couldn't care less about their academics and future career. I transferred to a top research university with a wonderful reputation and am finally receiving the education my parents are paying for and couldn't be happier with my decision to leave HPU. While this college is beautiful and the minute you step on campus you feel it is "where you belong", don't let them trick you. It is beautiful to look at and they shower you with "free" stuff, but once you're on the inside it sucks. There is absolutely no social life unless you want to feel like you're still in high school for the next 4 years of your life and be a part of the cliquey atmosphere that IS High Point University. There are no programs in place to help you find good internships and jobs once you graduate so if you want to go somewhere in your life don't count on HPU to offer you any assistance. The school does try to offer lots of programs (movie nights, dances) on the weekends for kids who don't like to party but they are often not well attended or attended by everyone who is drunk and only comes for a few minutes to see who is there and then goes out to one of the frat houses for the rest of the night. The surrounding city is dangerous and on several occasions there were townies that wandered onto the edges of campus and tried to get into frat parties. Not good. Just don't wander around campus alone at night, but that is basically a rule of thumb at any school. Overall they do a nice job trying to keep everyone on campus safe because it is blatantly obvious that the city of High Point itself is full of sketchballs.Overall, I am so happy I left HPU. I had several other friends who also transferred for the same reason, and if they didn't last year…the rest transferred after this past Fall 08 semester. If you just want to party hard, slide through your classes with little effort and make B's, and have no job to look forward to upon graduation…go for it, this might be the place for you. If you want a REAL social life, challenging academics, and career services, get your moneys worth and go to a much better school.
