New Paltz is an interesting place. After a semester an a half here this is my impression, I hope it will help people who are deciding to come here or not. This school is filled with wannabes. Mediocre artists, athletes, musicians, and scholars. Many people act like they are still in high school, especially freshman year.Socially, things can be cliquey, but its easy to make new friends at any time, not just the beginning of freshman year. If your not on a sports team, you better make some friends with jocks because they have the most reliable party scene, aside from the creepy frats. The bars are fun, and sometimes its a good dance party if people get really drunk, so bring an I.D. that works. Drugs and alcohol are common, and easy to get a hold of. The town is cute and very unique.Choose a res. hall wisely because it will probably determine a lot of your friends. 70% of people are from Long Island. The rest are from upstate new york. Theres only something like 30% males here.Academically, as an honors student, i take a lot of courses that are challenging and interesting. However, many freshman get away with doing barely any work because they choose easy classes to finish up their GEs. If you do the work, you get what you should out of a class, and a good grade is not hard. My classes are generally small, last semester my biggest class was 16 people and this semester 40 people. I know all of my professors by first name and last semester they all took the time to get to know me and my strengths. The food here is okay, you have to get creative with Hasbrouck Dining hall because there is NO variety in the menu. It repeats itself every week. The sub is a little better than fast food. dont worry, the gym is new and very nice, so working out is easy. There are great group fitness classes like yoga and pilates and spin classes a few times a week. There are lots of jobs available on campus doing anytype of work, but apply for Financial Aid because they reserve them for people who have work study grants.I am glad I came here because I was able to determine exactly what I want to study, finish a spanish minor, and study abroad for a reasonable price. Im transferring after sophomore year, to a better communications program in a city that can set me up with a valuable internship. The people here are nice and I've made some great friends along the way, and i won't ever regret my time here.
