Let me put it this way: I have a younger sister who is applying to colleges and I would NEVER let her go here.

Basically there are three groups of people here: (1) People who are legacies and have been "brainwashed" into loving Notre Dame no matter what, (2) Non-legacies who hate Notre Dame, and (3) People who don't care. The vast majority of the people who go here fall into the last two categories.

Almost everyone here is white, Catholic, and from the Midwest, so if you don't fit into all of those groups than you are going to have a hard time fitting in.

Social life here is non-existant and it is absolutely horrible. If you don't make a really great friend or group of friends freshman year than your next three years here are going to be painfully slow.

Contrary to what a lot of the die-hard legacies will tell you, most people here do not have meaningful friendships. To be honest with you, I have not met one person here who I can see myself being life long friends with. It is really hard to meet people here, as most people end up becoming friends with people who they are randomly placed in the same dorm with. Forget about having friends of the opposite sex—actually forget about interacting with the opposite much at all. Drunken makeouts at freshman dorm parties will pretty much be the extent of the interaction with members of the opposite sex that you will have here throughout your four years.

To sum it up, unless you are the type of person who can convince yourself that you like anything or you are a legacy who has always dreamed of coming here, I would stay away from Notre Dame. The vast majority of the people I know here either do not like ND or are apathetic. If you can get in here, then you can get into another good school with better social life.

Responses
responseI disagree with your groupings for the students at Notre Dame. My sister and many of her friends attend Notre Dame and ALL of them LOVE the university and all that it stands for.
commentI'm sorry you had a bad experience but it seems like you're making vast generalizations that are the opposite of the experience most students have at Notre Dame. As a current student, I cannot think of anyone that I know who attends ND that actually hates the university, and I fully expect that in 30 years I will continue to keep in touch with the friends I've made.
responseIf any student hates ND, he or she should try going to a school without the prestige of ND. Another school like this will be beyond hated. All the people at ND are as great as it gets. It's a no-brainer that ND only accepts the best and brightest.
responseThe third person responding, were you born stupid or did you grow into your imbecility? Hoping that you're a sarcastic bastard…
