I hate UNLV too. |
Major: Unknown (This Major's Salary over time)
I applied here because my major is Hospitality Management, seeing as there would be a lot of job opportunities, I took the chance and came here. I made the biggest mistake in choosing this school. I'm transferring out!ACADEMICSFairly easyNo one takes classes seriously, almost no one shows up to class. The workload is below average (rarely find myself doing schoolwork)Good Professors depend on the major (Hospitality is good)Many teachers are not fluent in English.Classes are usually around 20-40 people, with the rare 200 people lecture halls. There aren't even separate lecture or discussion classes, it is simply only two times a week. The upside to all of this is there are almost no classes held on Fridays, so basically everyone's weekend starts on Thursday. Also, everyone is always here on the weekends because they're mostly out-of-state.FACULTYThe most horrible faculty!! Rude, VERY unorganized. Basically a bunch of boneheads. It almost baffles me how stupid the faculty here actually is. I find myself going to unlv.edu and being redirected to many PAGE NOT FOUND pages. In November (when we were able to start signing up for the Spring Semester) my account was on hold, so I called up the admissions office, it took them 3 days to sort it out. They claimed I never sent in my official SAT scores (how did I even come here then??). Two days later they call me saying it was a mistake and their part and that my account is no longer on hold. Thanks UNLV.The school is so very unorganized with EVERYTHING worth being organized about but they are on the ball with everything that gets students in trouble. (I can't tell you how many people I know that got kicked out of the dorms just for their rooms SMELLING of marijuana)STUDENT BODYWhere to start…It is a bunch of unwelcoming, clique-ish, arrogant, and self absorbed individuals. I know people that drink AVIDLY almost every day of the week. No one cares enough to go to class or actually do the work. It is such a big let down for students that actually take pride in their work. People here don't even do enough to get by, I know a bunch of people that got kicked out of the University first semester for failing.Of course, everyone can always find someone to be friends with. Although, mentioned above is the majority. Also, there are tons people from almost every state and many international students.CAMPUSNice, new, and modern looking buildings. (couple of oldies here and there but overall, nice)Since it is desert, the campus is flat. Hooray for no crazy hills, and a million flight of stairs to overcome to get to class! The campus is quite big, I'd say it takes about a good 20-25 minutes to walk across diagonally.DORMSI live in Dayton Complex, it is very new (built 4 years ago). The rooms are very spacious and every two rooms share a restroom (suites). The restrooms you have to clean yourself. I'm actually sad to be leaving these huge dorm rooms! Tonopah, is also nice, looks very similar to Dayton. The UCC is smaller than you may think!! Also, try not to get Williams/Boyd/Rodman or any of those (actually, just don't even apply to this school, unless you're in it for hotel management). The food is also good enough. Where I don't feel like puking after every bite. I mean, not all the food is good all the time, most of their little specialty things are nasty!!SURROUNDING CITYYeah okay, there's the strip. I'll give you that. Even that gets old, quick. But what else? Oh god, once you get right off the strip everything is horribly ghetto. Don't get me wrong, there are nice cities and gated communities, but those are all about a good 40 minute drive (maybe more with the terribly congested LV traffic). There is also no where to eat other than fast food unless you're willing to spend the big bucks at one of the nice restaurants on and around the strip. Everything is really sketchy, I'm almost too afraid to ride the bus. (I have before, plenty of times, I've got to get places!). Even if you have a car there is nothing to do. That's how boring it is here. There's one 18+ club all the way out in Henderson (about 40min). The University plaza, or any plaza even close to UNLV consists of nasty food, or smoke shops. The strip isn't even close enough to walk to (well, it is, but you're in for about a ~2 mile walk).Everyone parties all the time, but that doesn't mean any of the parties are good. They get shut down around 12, and they basically suck. (Trust me, I've been)The tuition is also RIDICULOUSLY expensive for this place. I can't believe students pay the full out-of-state tuition (roughly 30k) to come here and also study a major that is not even taught well. Be wise and don't waste your money here. I don't know anyone that doesn't hate it here and isn't planning on transferring out. There is also absolutely ZERO school spirit. Everyone here commutes. You can walk around on a Thursday/Friday night and find NO one on campus. I absolutely hate is here and am miserable.Wow, I've just realized how BADLY I want this semester to be over so I can get the hell out of here.
