Cleveland State University's Department of Biological, Geological, and Environmental Sciences is a great place to go to school, study relevant material in the field, work with local companies, and get a degree. BUT, Cleveland State University as an institution of higher education is horrible!! Come and get a great education in the BGES department, but be prepared to go through hell dealing with nearly every facet of the university. In addition, please do a cost comparison with other schools based on ALL COLLEGIATE EXPENSES!! Cleveland State is a rip-off! They have continuously raised thier tuition (although they are on a 3 year freeze right now, as ordered by the governor), but will nickel and dime you to death. They even charge you to use a credit card!! All the campus facilities (dorms, bookstore, food, parking, etc.) are privately operated and price gauge like MAD!!! Do not take my word for it, check it out yourself! Here is a good starting ground - Look up how much it costs to live in the dorms (with or without a roommate); then add the mandatory meal plan (take the cheapest); then add the mandatory parking pass if you have a car; then add the grossly inflated costs of snack food, soda, first aid supplies, last minute office supplies, etc. that you will pay in the dorm store (there are no stores NOT affiliated with the university within walking distance); then add the FACT that you HAVE TO LEAVE DURING SPRING BREAK - OR - YOU CAN PAY AN ADDITIONAL FEE TO STAY BUT YOU HAVE TO TEMPORARILY MOVE TO ANOTHER FLOOR; and, finally, add the cost of living near a highway in a high crime city with homeless people all over the campus, sirens sounding all night, cars being broken in to; assults, drugs, etc. WHEN YOUR DONE…EVEN WITH THE FIRST TWO EXPENSES…You will notice that you can live in a luxury penthouse anywhere else for the same price. You can even afford to buy one of Cleveland's millions of foreclosed homes for the price of ONLY TWO YEARS of living in the dorms! The list goes on and on about how you will be nickel and dimed for everything you have and get nothing of substance in return (unless you count an incompetent staff).
