Major: Political Science (This Major's Salary over time)
I ended up at Wake Forest serendipity. I was not a good high school student, preferring carpentry work, shooting the bull, and hanging out with my redneck buddies. However, I was increasingly surprised that I could pick up a philosophy or science book and actually enjoy reading it. It also startled me that I could compose long research papers that brought together data from many sources. Anyway, despite otherwise mediocre grades, I did manage to parlay these strengths into admission to a state school. The state school was fun for a while”too fun really”and I found myself distracted even when I preferred not to be. The high rise dorms were noisy and rowdy and there was no place else to study after the library closed. I had visited a friend at Wake Forest and recalled how one could always find a quiet place to study. I transferred here my junior year. At Wake Forest, I found the academics initially intimidating mainly because there are no”I repeat, no—fluffy, “rocks for jocks -type courses to avail like at the state school. Every course counts. But thankfully these usually include writing assignments at which I excel. I have also experienced a major leap in my verbal intelligence on standardized tests while here (GRE: 96 percentile). After I graduate I will likely cycle back into construction to rest up a bit and then apply to law school.
