Major: Other (This Major's Salary over time)
I'm a four year minority student at DU. I've found most of the problems students list are issues that occur at the vast majority of campuses…drugs, fraternity/sorority dominance, unmotivated students, etc. Diversity is definitely an issue, but as a minority, I would find it hard to believe that you came to DU because of its diversity. DU is a very expensive school-likely one of the most expensive schools in the nation (note that tuition is going to increase just under 5% for the 2009-10 year)-so yes, there are quite a few upper class white students who attend. Also consider that the majority of undergraduate students (about 60%) apply for the business school. A lot of students I have met over the years have parents who own lucrative family businesses. One of my best friends father is the orthopedic surgeon for the Sacramento kings and I have a group member who's grandfather founded USA Parking, etc. So there is A LOT of money at this school. As was mention before, many students choose DU over Ivy league level schools because of DU's proximity to the ski resorts. All these things become even more apparent due to DU's small undergraduate population. On the plus side, the city of Denver has been voted the number one city for singles, #8 in the best cities for people 18-36, and the #2 healthiest city in the country. The lightrail system makes downtown easily accessible, and when you are willing to venture out from the typical college bar party/house party scene, the city has a lot to offer. Denver is home to every professional sport: NBA, NHL, NFL, MLS, MLB, MML, AFL. Denver even has several semi-pro football teams, minor league baseball, NBDL…not to mention ALL of the college sports. Hockey is a big deal at DU as well. The arts community in Denver is thriving, and there are so many outdoor/adventure sports to pursue, that if you find yourself bored, or with nothing to do…you are REALLY missing out. If I wasn't on scholarship, I couldn't for sure say that I would have still went to DU, but I love the city and value the education so I cannot complain too much.
