I loved my time at SMC. The professors were engaging and helpful, and really helped to make sure that I understood the content and went beyond.

A lot at St. Mary's is what you make of it. If you're willing to seek out help, or seek out activities and clubs, you'll be fine. If you're waiting for the prof to come to you because you haven't been doing well…you're going to keep waiting. You've got to take some initiative.

I noticed a couple people that had some bad experiences at SMC in the past. Of course it still happens—not everyone's going to be happy when they graduate—but I feel that on the whole things have gotten better. The comment about the music department is probably right: I find them to be self absorbed, arrogant, and rude (not unlike many of the current students in that major…).

They're not the rule. I call my professors by first name, and get told to stop calling them by doctor. I stop into their offices on a whim, and have regular coffee/tea meetings with faculty far outside my field. If you're friendly, willing to engage, and open, you'll find a good match at St. Mary's.
