Major: Art & Design Department (This Major's Salary over time)
When I was looking to transfer colleges, MidAmerica looked very appealing to me because the staff and faculty are extremely friendly, and the graphic design program seemed like it had been recently vamped.

However, this glamor soon faded as I became an actual student at the school. The graphic design department is still quite small, has no money, and is not challenging in the least.

The staff really varies from person to person in the visual arts department—there are some professors from the community college that come and basically teach a few classes to get by. A couple of them actually challenge you, but for the most part they show up late, and don't teach a damn thing. There is really zero challenge. Any web-related class will fall victim to this.

The problem with the art department here is that not even the art department cares about itself. The head of department I would describe as a craftsman, but definitely not an artist. He will teach you to design a certain way, and if you design things that certain way, you'll get the A. You're not getting your moneys worth here as a design major, and I would highly suggest you leave the Nazarene bubble and go to a school with a real art department. There are seniors in my classes who still struggle with programs, using computers, or even the smallest design task. Sadly, no one cares about this department. Some students on campus are unaware that we even offer graphic design as a major. They are desperately behind with technology, and the printer is never calibrated, nor will it have ink.

Also, some of the gen. ed requirements are ridiculous. I took AP Calculus in high school, but I was still required to take Applied Mathematics. Before I transferred, they were also going to make me take Algebra.

If your major is nursing, sociology, or ministry, I would highly recommend MNU. Everyone I have talked to from these departments would agree, and those departments get lots of attention. I've thoroughly enjoyed the diversity of chapel speakers, and also Randy Beckum (currently the class chaplain).
