Major: Art & Design Department (This Major's Salary over time)
I chose Eastern Michigan University because of the fact they gave me a tremendous scholarship and my family is pretty tight with money. I'm from out of state and I didn't know anyone else going here and I thought that would be a good thing, boy was I wrong. Majority of the students are from the surrounding area and often commute, leaving the campus empty on the weekends. Also, a lot of them know others before they even come to the school so friendships are already established- making it harder for other people who don't know anyone to make friends. Many of the students who do live on campus often skip class and get drunk on weeknights. Overall, the campus is very unsafe. I often feel very uncomfortable walking around campus at night because there is basically no one else around. The college itself says its pretty safe but I find that to be a joke. They have an escort service… but it only goes until 1am!? If i was at a party and felt uncomfortable the escort service wouldn't even be available! It is not lively like a typical college campus would be. Ypsilanti is a joke when it comes to a college town, with about 2 restaurants and a Jimmy Johns. There is nothing to do besides going to an unsafe party, no movie theaters, no bowling alleys, or anything of the sort. Everywhere else you have to travel by car. The dorms are horrible, atleast in the First Year Center. The stairways are often littered with trash. The rooms themselves are very small, a 12ft by 12ft space with no airconditioning and little heat. People are often very loud at night keeping you awake. The classes are somewhat decent- yet it has the feel more of a community college than university. My math class we are currently learning percentages and slope… stuff I learned in 7th grade. It is often a mishmash of classes, some incredibly easy but others if you miss one class you will feel so far behind. Also, the teachers often like to talk about themselves more than actually teaching, often saying how they are "professionals" in their field. I am happy to say that I am leaving Eastern Michigan at the end of the semester to go to a real university to get an amazing education, even if I do have to take out student loans.
