I am absolutely in love with this school. I'm just finishing my first semester and am currently home for the holidays—everyone has said I look glowing and happy with my life and where I'm at right now.I could write all day about the amazing things Rice has done for me, so I'll make a list.1. The residential college system—hands down the best was to make sure everyone is included, valued, etc. This allows for great relationships between underclassmen and upperclassmen (the upperclassmen here are always willing to help!) as well as with RAs, Masters, etc. It's literally like a family. Your residential college sees you at your absolute best and absolute worst—and loves you anyway.2. Student attitudes—the typical Rice student is happy, energetic, involved, smart, and genuine. People here don't place a lot of value on money, clothes, etc. They're also really cooperative—no cutthroat competition happening here. Help is available from everywhere, and you never feel "alone" with whatever issue you may have. People are open and friendly. O-Week is a great tool for making new friends, but I met some of my best friends through classes, my college, etc. 3. The academics are stellar. Professors are approachable, friendly, and extremely knowledgeable. For the most part, tests require actual comprehension of the material, not just ability to memorize and regurgitate. There's a lot of work but it's not busy work.—Basically, I could go on forever. Rice is an amazing place which fosters intellectualism and the qualities of a truly good person—honestly, kindness, respect, and dedication. The "popular" people here are usually selfless people who dedicate themselves to volunteering in Houston, at Rice, at their college, etc. Everyone makes friends and though there are definitely friend groups, the lack of Greek system takes out the air of exclusivity and materialism that tends to plague other institutions.
