It's amazing to read the feedback on here. I laughed at some of the negative comments because in all honesty those commentators probably never gave SHU a fair shake. As a recent alumnus, I would agree that there is a large population from the Northeast-not just Long Island. There are several students from New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and obviously Connecticut. There is undeniably a NY/NJ vs. New England type of rivalry on campus, but in my experiences it was all in good fun for the most part.

Academically, I had a solid educational experience. Is it Harvard? I don't know, because I wasn't admitted to Harvard, but it was engaging and personal. The core curriculum, although not always the most entertaining, was beneficial and included Psychology, English, History, Communications, and Philosophy among other courses. In fact, although I was a business major, I found the Communications class that I took as a first semeseter freshman to be one of my most influential throughout my college experience. It gave me the courage and taught me the skills needed to be an effective public speaker or presentor at work. The business major was thorough and I always felt that professors were available and willing to help whenever I needed. My average class size was about 20 students, however I did have a couple of classes in the Schine Auditorium which were probably about 35-40 students. I completed three internships as a student and was employed full-time within 3 weeks of graduation.

Socially, there are lots of things to do. However, it also takes some work on your end. It is easy to be bored and have a negative experience if you don't want to leave your dorm room and ONLY want to party. While I definitely partied, I also took advantage of going to all of the D-1 sporting events for free, including football and basketball. I was also involved with student government. I didn't get involved with theatre, band, or choir but it was available. There are two radio stations on campus, and a TV Channel. I've been told that the fraternities and sororities are now national chapters, so that could be a good experience. The school hosted several concerts while I was there, at least 1 big concert every year. Mr. SHU competition was always a good time. Also, I remember the school sponsored trips to a Yankees game, Christmas Tree Lighting at Rockefellar Center, a couple Broadway shows, and FrightFest at Great Adventure.

Personally, I met a lot of great people, who I continue to stay in touch with today and had an overall outstanding experience. I hope you do as well, and feel free to reach out for advice. At the very least, go visit SHU on your own and formulate your own opinion of the school. Good luck!
