I graduated from HPU in 1996. I have enjoyed reading the reviews and seeing how things have changed. Now, I love Hawaii and enjoyed my time as a Sea Warrior. I never felt unsafe, but, Fort Street Mall does have its share of hookers (not the nice expensive ones like in Waikiki)and there are homeless in the area. I started out living in the dorms for two semesters and once I met some people we moved into Waikiki. I had a car but found the bus to be easier to use most of the time. I would sugest living in student housing for the first semester and then get an apartment with friends. The main state library is a very short walk from the downtown campus as is often a better choice. If a more acedemic library is needed you should go to UH. I spent every Sunday at the UH library. The libraries at HPU just are not that great and unless they have been updated they could be in bad shape. My advice would be to go to classes during the day and once school is out forget about it and enjoy everything Honolulu has to offer. I do not regret anything about HPU and would do it all again.
