Let it be known that the Brooks Institute of Photography is not what it once was…for anyone looking into a school to pursue their passion for the photographic arts at…look past Brooks.

I spent a year and a half at Brooks, immersed myself in the curriculum and atmosphere, only to slowly begin to open my eyes to the reality of the school's shortcomings. Many of the students who attend Brooks are well-off kids who look down their noses at individuals of lesser means. Teachers are for the most part approachable, however there are a few which seem to expect everyone to bow at the very sight of them, while other teachers criticize your work heavily, but don't know everything about photography (probe them a little, and they'll quickly get annoyed and move on to the next student readily willing to idolize them as a defense mechanism to cover up their ignorance).

For anyone considering the Brooks Institute as their future place of higher learning, let me tell you that, if you truly are passionate about your art, and are of average intelligence, there is NOTHING that you will learn at this school that you will not accomplish or arrive at by careful examination of the photographic process…NOTHING.

In photography, there really are no magic tricks…there is no "Holy Grail" that will transform you into an overnight success. To become a true artist, a recognizable photographer amongst photographers, requires a deep-rooted passion and belief in your abilities…that means devoting yourself completely to the study of light and its effect the photographic medium…slow down, look around you, study the way the light falls upon the world at different times of the day, in different seasons, in different places. Some of the world's most renown photographers have such a simplistic approach to their shots that if you were to work as an assistant to them, you'd kick yourself for having spent THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS AT THE BROOKS INSTITUTE TO DO A BUNCH OF BUSY WORK THAT YOU COULD HAVE LEARNED A LOT FASTER AND MUCH MUCH MUCH MORE INEXPENSIVELY AT A DECENT COMMUNITY COLLEGE.

Brooks has a lot of equipment available to you…SO WHAT!! A camera is a camera is a camera. Remember, its the photographer's eye that sees an image, not the camera.

An amateur worries about the equipment.

A professional worries about time.

An Artist worries about the light.
