Major: Education (This Major's Salary over time)
I attended UWM from 2003 to 2008, and graduated with a B.S. in Education. I just completed my M.A. in a different, private University on the east coast. Studying and teaching at this college has helped me realize that UWM is a very underrated school.First and foremost, live in the dorms (or in an off-campus apt.) if possible. The University is trying to build dorms for the students so everyone can live on campus. I was a commuter, and it's not the way to go. When you live on campus, you meet people, and it's a lot easier to retain friends and have some fun.Athletics at UWM are very underrated. I miss Milwaukee basketball games and soccer games—and they're free, by the way. Nevertheless, if the "highest tier" is most important to you, you'll never be able to look beyond Marquette or the Badgers, which is a shame. Don't count on too much fan support at games, but that didn't stop me from going. From an academic standpoint, UWM is a solid school. It has excellent Nursing, Business, Education and Arts programs, and is particularly known for its Architecture school. Ignore the U.S. News Rankings which categorize UWM as a Tier-4 college; these rankings have no effect on 90% of the students. Ironically, many of the factors that affect these rankings correlate with graduate studies (professor publications, funding, research output, etc.), and have little to do with the undergraduate experience. Many of my professors were tenured, but still very friendly and eager to help. Basically, you can't compare UWM and Madison in terms of undergraduate study. Now Graduate School… that's a different topic. In the end, UWM is underrated, and I don't regret going there for my Bachelor's degree. Going to a school like Marquette is tempting, but I saved thousands of dollars by going to a state school, and it paid off. But honestly, if you don't like it, you can always transfer. Just don't commute—it's no way to go through college.
