I would say that SIU is the best "cheap" school in Illinois. Yes, Carbondale overall is a rundown, crime-ridden hole on southern Illinois, but the school is a good school with lots of diversity, organizations, and everything you need for a quality college experience. It has a reputation as a party school, which it definitely is, but there is still plenty of room and resources to be serious about your education and still have something to do on the weekends. Some of the campus buildings are older, bit they are still suitable and functional. I really love walking through the quad and think that the campus is beautiful. There are lots of resources for students, adequate research facilities, public transportation, health services, and a really nice recreation center. There are tons of parties and bars that often have prettty big events and sponsors. If you are not one for drinking, there are still lots of community and campus activites, along with tons of things to do outdoors. Basically, this town was built around and runs for SIU, so it has aleverything that a college student could want or need. P.S.—it is still called slumville or the dirty south, so beware. Lots of ugly people and gingers, but lots of beautiful people too.P.S.S—Greek life at SIU is a JOKE. None of the Greeks here focus on being social, academic, and philanthropic, just on making decent grades and barhopping or binge drinking every weekend. So if you are not a partier and you are serious about Greek life, go somewhere else.
