As an in-state student, I picked URI because it was cheap and only 7 miles from where I commute. My in-state knowledge is also probably why I really enjoy the campus and what it offers.

The winter can be very harsh on campus, especially with the wind, so you need to invest in warm clothes and an umbrella. But the late fall, spring and summer semesters are beautiful. There is a shuttle bus system that is under-used, which is why there are only a few running at one time - but it is very handy for those that know about it. The emporium on top of the hill provides excellent places to eat as well as a CVS, Cumbie's and an alternative book store. Parking is "eh". There are four commuter lots and there is always room if you don't mind parking in the biggest and furthest lot (the shuttle buses do transport up and down).

The professors and faculty are great, friendly, and seem sincerely interested in the students and their opinions. You really have to make yourself known to the professors, especially in the large classes.

There are of course downsides. Funding is really low, which leaves the older buildings in pretty bad shape and the campus understaffed. The classroom electronics don't always cooperate and professors often have to teach off the top of their heads (kudos to those that do it successfully).

I unfortunately may have to transfer out of state, but no other university seems to come close to what URI offers.
