I was quite shocked by all the extremely negative opinions about Knox found on this website. Knox has its good sides and bad sides, but overall I think that any college which has certain basic characteristics(good resources, buildings, library, faculty) is largely what you make of it. While Knox was not my first choice, I loved most of the things about Knox and really enjoyed my time there.

POSITIVE ASPECTS:

  • great professors, really involved and helpful, at least the ones I worked with,
  • beautiful campus with character (though the buildings are not super brand new and lavish), the campus is one coherent whole without all the oversized and garish buildings which many colleges build and then tear down 20 years later
  • great library,
  • high level of classes and a lot of interesting courses that will broaden your horizons, they teach you really well how to READ and WRITE (capabilities which many other college grads seem to lack)
  • good resources for independent study and research
  • great preparation for graduate/professional school
  • friendly environment
  • decent diversity, people from all over the us and world
  • NEGATIVE ASPECTS:

  • Galesburg is a small town, and while it has some lovely historic buildings and some nice restauarants, it has its limitations, so be sure you know what you are getting yourself into, this gets really bad during winter term
  • small endowment, compared to say Amherst or Grinnell, although things are improving,
  • limited name recognition (although the people I dealt with for job/grad school knew that the education provided was firs-rate, but I guess I was lucky)
  • a few of the professors and some of the students suck, a few are quite dumb, but that you will encounter at any school
  • the limitations of all undergrad programs: you learn a lot, but not a profession, like law, medicine or architecture so you need to go to grad. school to learn that
  • the small size of the student body and faculty can get really claustrophobic at times, especially at winter
  • Overall I loved Knox. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to get a world-class education, but be aware of what going there and living in Galesburg entails. I am currently at a top graduate program, and Knox was an excellent preparation for what I am doing now.
