UMUC is a complete fraud and I would not recommend it. I completed most of my education overseas back in 1985 (102 credits). I decided to go back to school and try to finish in 2006 after a job layoff. It had taken almost 2 years for UMUC to get my transcripts from Japan and get everything setup. I had been working with time restrictions to get this done because I wanted to use my MGIB which was due to expire in 2007. Long story short, my head was not ready for school because I had been layed off my job so I dropped out of the two on-line classes. Even though I dropped out using their administrative system, one of my teachers sent e-mail stating she had not been notified. So I called and dropped out using the telephone. UMUC wanted to charge me full price for both classes. I appealed and my appeal was denied because they said I did not drop the class. So I called the Student Advisory Director only to find out that he wouldn't talk to students. This was absurd! So I contacted the admin department and they faxed me a copy of my record showing me the date I dropped the classes. Unfortunately the fax was unreadable. So I decided not to pay. Then I got a call from the OSI to collect. Being retired military, I wanted to protect my retirement, I was afraid. The OSI person got all my banking information including my balances. If you are retired military you know not to fight with the OSI. Come to find out this OSI agency was a collection agency for UMUC and they were not associated with the military OSI at all. This was a complete fraud to me. I got 30 letters from them demanding pay or suffer all sorts of consequences. You remember the $250 from the Federal Government, these OSI guys took it. None of this would have happened if UMUC was capable of managing its affairs. So if you are military attending classes on-line or overseas, stop and run like hell. You are not getting your money's worth and UMUC will harass you until you die. This school is a fraud just by the name. For years I thought this was the Univ. of Maryland at College Park. Our application and grade forms didn't say UMUC they only said University of Maryland. I thought this school was Division I with a football, basketball, and baseball teams. When I returned from Japan in 1985 I was very disappointed to find out I had attended three years of college at a fly by night school posing as a fraud. They were not University of Maryland like many students and Air Force officers thought they were. What a fraud! I currently live in San Antonio Texas and we have the UTSA which is University of Texas at San Antonio which is clearly not UT at Austin or UT at Dallas, or UT at Arlington, or UT at Brownsville, or UT at Tyler. You get the picture? It's not the fraud perpetrated by having UMUC. This is the only university in the country identified or miss represented this way. You can image if you are a young military member and overseas in Japan or Germany looking to attend college and one of your options are the University of Maryland this would be a very good option. Unfortunately, it's a lie and fraud. It's not the University of Maryland but a low life school trying to make an easy dollar off the military. The military and tax payers should be outraged over this thievery which is happening on military installations all around the world!
