A friend told about this site, so I would like to be as fair as I can for the overall quality of Fort Hays State University.

I'm originally from Sacramento and was turned on by a recommendation from a family friend about this school. So I decided to try something different with a new change of pace.

In all honesty the quality of the education is good for the price. It's quite affordable, especially if you are an in-stater.;) Everything a respectable university should have is offered. Sports, recreation, reasonably small classes, etc. If you are familiar with midwest deserted villages, this school might be for you. If not, be warned: This place is so slow it is "backwards." And I mean backwards in every sense of the word. Ok, now to share what is a little scary about this small isolated western Kansas town.

  • The nearest urban city is over 4 hours away with nothing in between.
  • Steroids, beer, rednecks, more drunkards, more rednecks. That sums up the college culture.
  • The Hays Police. The city has cleverly set an infinite funnel of money fueled by these same students.
  • Culture/diversity. I think that is a bad word there. There is a culture, but it is singled out to closeminded conservative hickaroos. If you are not a caucasian (by the way I am) or from this wide open plain, you're likely not to care for this place much, unless you are on the football team, if you know what I mean.
  • Now back to a positive point, or negative depending how you look at it I guess. The Girls: Can be a plus. Imagine deprived conservative catholic girls finally on their own in the big college life. Not bad.
  • Social life: After about two months you will likely become bored to tears for social variety in Hays. There are like 2 bars that everyone (whose anyone lol) attend weekend after weekend. And thats it!
  • To sum it up, I was ok with the quality of education, but the 'backwardnes' was too much to bear. I think they prefere 'locals only' here and tend to want to keep it that way. Thats fine with me,I transferred to a place with a beating pulse after a year. If you cherish your liberty, then I would choose a different school to attain your education. Hope this helps all who aren't quite sure about the location.
