Before I begin; a word of warning…SHU is a business first and foremost - an academic institutions second. The students and the faculty can be closed-minded and the demographic is rather homogeneous. There is a general lack of professionalism from almost every academic department and a severe deficiency in motivation - not to mention the lexicon of the student body is rather shallow and tends to feature the phrases of drunken bar talk more so than any sort of mentally stimulating discourse. The school prides itself on being small and sadly that does not leave a lot of room for diversity. Those seeking actual progression in their studies may choose to stay because of friends, as I did (judge the value of your own friendships wisely), or because of a scholarship that they received. Most others are arrogant, immature and insecure about their capacity for growth. Not to say that there aren't those whom try. Every once in a while you might find a so-called ; a student that is genuinely interested in their education and will push themselves above and beyond the listless and negligent members of the faculty. This school may not be the right choice for you, yet seemingly it was for me. As a graduate, I was able to secure a job fresh from commencement and maintain a decent salary. The department I was interested in is the sole reason I applied to this university. However, while the faculty were enthusiastic enough at first - that attitude changed as I progressed in my studies. Still, there are those individual professors whom I remain in touch with. Networking may be your only saving grace here at SHU. Choose your friends wisely and be cautious about making enemies. Between the faculty and the students, soiled relations are far too easy to come by.
