I will be a Creative Writing Major as well with a minor in Drama. For you, how is the course work. I know that the general consensus is that the work is extremely hard, but as an English major is the course load still very heavy and overwhelming? |
The work isn't bad at all as an English major. If you're an excellent essay writer you'll breeze through it without a problem, which, being a Writing major, I'm sure you are :) |
Thank you so much for your response :) And I love essays, so I'm relieved that you said I should be fine. I read on one of the other reviews that the school and GenEd requirements push alot of science and math classes on you. Is this true for English majors? Because those are my weakest subjects. Also, how resourceful and helpful are the teachers? I want to publish a book that I've written this year, how would they help you? |
They would probably only be able to help you publish by seeking out a publisher in the Pittsburgh area - there is only so much they can do, although they might know a few editors you could go to for your work. Professors likely will not do editing work for you unless you know them very well, which will likely come around your junior/senior year.As an HSS student you only need to take one math/programming, one statistics, and one science class. For the science class you can take something like "Chemistry in the Kitchen," which is basically chem for retards (like me). You bake and then learn about the chem behind the baking. So the sci/math requirements aren't too bad at all. |
Major: English (This Major's Salary over time)
I love CMU. At first I wasn't too sure if this would be the school for me - after all, come on, CMU for Creative Writing? But it turns out the program is very respected and I felt incredibly appreciated here. H&SS, despite being the "unloved" school at CMU, seems to be the closest-knit community on campus. Many HSS kids know each other and there's a strong camaraderie. The university as a whole is much more attractive, hard working, and intelligent than I had expected upon coming here. the social life is also great, even with a lot of the frats being on probation for various stunts during rushing/hazing. I never have trouble finding something fun to do on weekends. Kids are intellectual, but still grounded and down to earth and they know how to have fun. There are those few privileged kids who came from uber-special private schools and have never had anyone threaten their intellectual power; they're annoying as shit. But everyone else seems to ignore them or move around them and continue living their lives. So far I've loved the school and it's offered me everything I want to do. I will be completing dual coursework in Creative Writing and Human-Computer Interaction, with a minor in fine arts or design. :) Go Tartans!
