EVERY single person looks like they crawled out of a J.Crew magazine (LITERALLY, not one person was not extremely preppy). I took a tour there and the students who saw me made fun of my nose ring while I was on the tour (I'm not even very edgy, I was wearing like a Lilly sweater, jeans, and uggs and I got made fun of on my tour). The information session we had there was really weird too, the guy said ridiculous things like,
I can tell the difference between an HWS alum and any other person just while walking down the street
It's a shame that people there are so snotty, it's a BEAUTIFUL campus right on one of the finger lakes.

If you like pretty campuses, cold weather, and don't like people that are not preppy, this is a good place for you though.

responseI'd just like to start by telling that you I have a nose ring, and guess what? I have tons of friends at HWS, even some preppy ones.

I'm a rising senior and I've certainly had my share of doubts about choosing HWS, but they quickly subsided while I was traveling the world through an HWS abroad as a sophomore—an incredible experience that most people aren't lucky enough to have AT ALL during college, let alone as a sophomore.

Yes, there are a lot of kids who look like they stepped straight out of J.Crew (and they probably did since the outlet is so close to campus), but who cares? Maybe you're just judging them like they judged you.

I'm sorry that you had such a terrible visit to HWS, but I wish that we'd talked, because I had a similar reaction when I toured the campus, but looked deeper than the appearance of the people around me. I came for the global education program, the strong academics mixed with a great studio art program, financial aid, and a beautiful lake and I've loved every minute of each of those things. I also found that a lot of the people who I would have judged as "preppy" or just an "ignorant rich kid" turned out to be really great people who are just as vested in the same causes as I am.

Yes, we have our share of unmotivated rich kids who don't have to work because whatever they need will be handed to them, but all that means is that those of us who aren't lazy and privleded get more financial aid and less competition for all of the great things that HWS has to offer.

I hope that you're happy wherever you ended up, but please don't be so quick to judge a college that you really don't know.
