As other posters have written, Houghton is in the middle of poverty-ridden New York State. It is so in-bred that people who work there have no clue about modern culture. This place does NOT prepare one for the secular world. Fine, if you plan on going into the ministry - otherwise, you are wasting your time and money. As for dating? OMG! This place is so repressed that pregnancy is the reason many girls drop out: They have taken abstinence pledges in their Christian High Schools. As soon as they get off-campus with their first college boyfriend, they go wild. Then sudden guilt overcomes them and they rush to get married. Great school if you like living in the 1950s.

A fact about modern culture bears mentioning, in connection with this comment: modern culture is increasingly data-driven and source critical. I have questions about the modern culture chops of someone who thinks their decade-old impressions (when posted—now 13 years old) are likely to be of current validity.
