I had a very strong desire to attend the University of Louisville and live in Louisville. That is, until I actually became a student there. I had nearly a full-ride there and almost dropped out because the social life and campus friendliness leave a lot to be desired. Southern hospitality generally does not exist in Louisville; most of the guys are pretty chill, although from the city and with their same friends they have had since high school. The women are some of the most haughty and self-absorbed I've met anywhere, and that includes even the ugly ones; however, one perk was that when a girl was interested in you, she was really interested.

The educational quality isn't overly challenging, Speed School of Engineering excepted. If you join Speed, laugh your rear off when/if the dean gives you a lecture about how they don't like to "weed" people out. A freshman class there will start with 350+ students; they may have 25-40 graduate. In Kentucky, they're the best engineering school but they don't have the best part of campus, either.

Back to the social aspect: I typically try to be a positive and outgoing person, but that was very hard to do at UofL. I didn't even find a good social network of people with whom I clicked until 2 1/2 years there. That said, this small-town guy from Kentucky started associating with members of the Indian Student Association and was made to feel welcome with open arms. But many of the Louisville natives, on and off campus, are very standoffish. Overall, I've met friendlier people in/from Orange County (CA), Houston and New York City.
