First of all, I am an upcoming Sophomore here at UNC Charlotte. I am originally from Gastonia, NC which is about 30 minutes down the road. UNC Charlotte was my first choice of schools over NC State and App State.

Secondly, I am very involved on campus. I was in the Emerging Leaders and Students in Free Enterprise and have now been chosen to be a member of the Student Alumni Ambassadors. I am in a learning community called Building Educational Strengths and Talents (BEST) and I am very satisfied with this program. It offers free printing, extra advising, educational supplies, free mock interviews, opportunities to go on out of state trips, free tutoring and there are many more benefits. Some of the resources on campus are the Writing Resource Center (WRC), University Center for Academic Excellence (UCAE) and the Math Learning Center (MLC). I have personally used the WRC on several occasions. The WRC offers free tutoring on your writing(editing papers or just practice on writing skills) by Graduate students. The Math Learning Center offers tutoring with math while the UCAE offers tutoring on almost all core subjects(Bio, Calc, etc) including the classes that are covered in the MLC. UNC Charlotte's library is also an excellent resource that we have. The size of the 10 story building(plus a basement) is excellent for people like me who like to disappear into the library and study. With the size of the library it also offers more than adequate literature for your studies and personal readings(if you so choose).

There have been a lot of complaints on this website about the social life here at UNC Charlotte. My favorite part about the social life here is between the student orgs and the athletic events. The basketball games this past year were some of my favorite memories from my first year. It is extremely easy to get caught up and excited in the heat of a Charlotte 49er basketball game. I went to all but 2 or 3 home games this year. For those of you who do plan to attend school here next year I highly recommend that you join Niner Nation Gold in which allows you better seating at Basketball games. With the addition of coach Alan Major in the past few months I am extremely excited about next season. The student orgs that I am involved help to take up a good deal of the rest of my time. The networking opportunities that arise through student orgs are also very beneficial and enjoyable. Just the other day I was able to help with the Charlotte Regional Awards luncheon in which several famous people were in attendance such as Mayor Foxx and Humpy Wheeler(Pres of Lowes/Charlotte Motor Speedway). If you are a party person then there is also plenty of parties to go to( I am not a party person). The party bus picks up from Wednesday night to the weekend and takes students to the clubs. There are also a lot of frat/sorority parties from my understanding.

Right now is an extremely exciting time to be a student at UNC Charlotte. If you ever get the chance to look at the campus master plan then please do so as it made me excited about the future. The administration has also made great strides in recent years to build new, state of the art buildings (there is a whole area near the Union that is basically under 5 years old).

commentI totally agree with everything you had to say about UNC charlotte! I love the school and all the extra cirricular activites you can get involved in. I am excited to be a 49er in the Fall of 2010.
questionHey i was planning to choose UNCC for my graduate education…spring 2011 but i saw in some review and felt bad that there is crime rate around the university so high…snrs can u please guide me…how is the university and computers department?how about on campus jobs and internships…plz…
responseFirst off, I don't think the crime rate around the University is a big issue. I personally haven't been a victim of any crime. If you are smart about how you travel late at night then its not an issue. Its comparable to other schools.
I don't know how our computer department ranks against other schools, sorry about that, but I haven't heard any complaints.
I have an on campus job through the Federal Work Study program. If you're a grad student then you could always apply to be a GA/TA and if you don't get it then there is an online website where jobs are posted.
Internships depends on your department and I'm a business major so I can't speak specifically for computer related programs but if you get involved in certain extracurriculars then internships aren't a real problem.
I hope this helps some.
questionHI,
I'm joining to join this fall, but seeing the comments about university , i'm feeling whether iam getting into a wrong place and wasting my career. How is the university placements after MS in Computer science.
responseI'm not sure how our Master's of Comp Science ranks compared to other Universities but I haven't heard any complaints.
questionI am very interested in knowing more about your campus experience, connecting your passions to your career path and career connections. What concerns do you have about graduating? What programs are in place to support you through your schooling to insure you are connected with the correct companies that are aligned with your strengths, sense of purpose and passions?

responseMy campus experience has been very good. I have put a lot of time and energy into student organizations and especially SIFE (belkcollegeofbusiness.uncc.edu/sife). SIFE has allowed me to connect with higher up professionals in the field like crazy. The University has a career center which gives you an online portal where jobs are posted by companies. It helps give you direction when looking for jobs/internships. They also help with resumes, have mock interviews and hold a career fair each semester.

As far as connecting with my passions, I have used student organizations to do that. Most students will graduate with a degree and get a job in another field (ie economics degree to marketing field). If you want you can also engage in some co-ops. The career center can help you with that as well as job shadowing Does that answer your question thoroughly?
