MC is a very unique and different college.. and its true that not everyone will like it. Not everyone appreciates it for what it offers. If you like hard partying, this is not your school, there are larger schools that can provide this atmosphere for you. However, this has never been my goal for a college experience. I love the college, the people, and the campus. I came to the college not knowing anyone my age, and I've been able to meet so many great friends and so many great people that I really click with. People are open with their faith and its so encouraging coming from a high school where people only pretended to believe. They arent scared to talk about it or share what they believe, but they also arent obnoxious and in your face with it either! There are so many opportunities to do service and help out others. There are also so many fun activities put on by the Campus Activities Board, like really great (often free!) concerts and crawfish boils, etc. And it really is just like the college advertisements. On a given spring day with great weather, you could walk across the Quad, which is the central walkway/field on campus (kinda like the Grove at Ole Miss) and you'll see people laying out with friends, people in hammocks, playing ultimate frisbee, throwing the baseball or football. You see people you know on the way to class. They're friendly and say hey or good morning, which really brightens my morning on the way to my 8 or 9 oclock class.

I'm also in a social tribe. Although these are not for everyone, at MC these are a really big part of the social life. These allow you to get involved on campus and have social events to go to often, and make friends, even if you have trouble doing so. You can run for office after your first semester that allows you to get really involved. Also, these are not expensive like sororities and fraternities. Dues are only about $100 a semester and formal is about $100, which is soo cheap compared to the thousands you have to pay for sororities at large colleges. Swaps are often planned between the other tribes and clubs. People often hang out intertribally! Many people have roommates in a different tribe. You dont have to exclusively be friends with people within your tribe. Rush for tribes arent difficult at all like rush for sororities, you are not chosen by the tribe! You choose the tribe that fits you best and that you want to be in! However, if the amount of people that want in overfill the cap, these are drawn at random to see who gets their second tribe preference. This is a very fair system that does not hurt feelings like the sororities method!

However, there are certainly people who do not rush, and there are other things for them to get involved in on campus. I would advise you to at least try rushing to see if you like it! it really is so fun, but if you dont like it you can always drop later after you give it a try and still keep the friends you made while rushing.

Some people at MC don't like it and say that the college people are closeminded and judgmental. Sure, there are some people like that, there are people like that everywhere. However, if ive learned anything its this: the most closeminded people on campus are the people who always point fingers at MC's Christian students and call them closeminded. If they would stop saying everyone is closeminded, put away their judgmental attitude, and try talking to the people they call mean and judgmental, Im sure their opinion would change!

The schools academic program is really great. However, like every school, MC specializes in different things. Its best program is the biology/pre med department and nursing department. The rate of people getting into med school from MC is very significant. (all the stats should be on the website- look it up!) The program is geared towards getting you prepared for med school, so it is really really hard, but it makes med school not as challenging. This is partially due to the fact that the program is designed by a professor who also teaches at the med school in Jackson. He teaches there so he knows how to get students as prepared as they can be.

The other programs are also good, but i dont know as much about them considering i am a biology major. I have friends in very different majors though and they all like it!

In the Core classes, there are some teachers that really dont do a great job.. they are just an easy A alternative for people who really want to concentrate all of their efforts on their major and not on the core. but you can prevent getting these teachers by getting the good teacher! For ex. Dr. Parke is an incredible teacher for Bible, which is a core class. (But dont worry, even if you arent a Christian, it is so interesting cause the Bible has such historical value and its such an interesting class!)

Theres so much more I could say.. I could talk for hours and hours about MC and all of the things it offers and the way I truly feel myself while Im there! Whenever I talk to my friends who are prospective students I just cant stop telling them how much they are going to love it! As MC says, find faith, find family, find your future :)

The most important thing about college, wherever you go, is connecting yourself to the campus. Find your niche! Through your major, through rushing, through different service clubs or organizations, you have a place on campus. Allow yourself to excel! College is to prepare you for your life as an adult- so you can get education to get a job, but also the social skills it takes to be successful in your field. However, you have to make it happen! You cant just sit there and expect college to become instantly amazing for you. You have to push yourself and put yourself out there, even though its scary. Its up to you to make your college experience what you want it to be!
