My daughter just finished her first year at Storrs. Unfortunately, the final exam period ended with a close call with violence and harassment of another student, including property damage which would be considered a crime off-campus. The claim that UCONN is a great school with spirit, good ratings, improving academics, etc. needs to be assessed in conjunction with the quality of life and the level of responsibility that the university takes for the safety of its students. Violence is typically preceeded by an escalation of events that with intervention can be prevented. The events surrounding Jasper Howard's death support this conclusion as well. There is no security at all in the residence halls or on campus. Spring Weekend is an example: 60 or so people arrested - not UCONN students but on UCONN property and thus the responsibility of UCONN. The students are, after all, college kids…occassionally, partying gets out of hand. They are not adults, yet, and I feel it is UCONN's responsibility to be partially accountable for their quality of life. And that would include having a police force that enforces the law and residence staff that enforces residence hall policies.

commentThe ResLife Staff does enforce policies and you cannot judge an entire school on two incidences that were very highly publicized. I am going to be a junior at UConn and never once have I felt unsafe. I know the UConn police are a quick phone call away and there are an immense amount of resources available for students if they do not feel safe. I would like to know what you thought of this (2011) year's spring weekend. Reslife did an excellent job enforcing policies and the police were very visible, as they often are even on regular weekends.
responseUnfortunately, the incidents continue. I am not referring to publicity but first hand experience. The latest: a near knife attack in the dorms; the knife mark is still in the wall. Next, a guy getting ticked off at his girlfriend and urinating outside my daughter's room. where are the RA's? The quality of life is just not there. I can't comment on spring weekend because my daughter came home- better safe than sorry.
