Major: Fine Arts - Painting/Sculpture/Photography/etc (This Major's Salary over time)
One year ago I graduated my community college with an Associate's degree, with my eye on a four-year institution. UTC was not my first choice. I had wanted to go to Maryville College, a private school, but it was simply unaffordable, even with the scholarships they offered. My choices for a different school were limited, because I was seeking a place where I could earn my B.F.A while also studying theatre and the Japanese language on the side. My choices came down to MTSU, ETSU, UAH, and UTC. I chose UTC because of its affordability, location, and the recommendation of my art teacher from my old school, who had taught at UTC some years before.I've heard complaints about the Gen Ed classes at UTC being too many and useless to most majors. I skipped that problem by transferring with an A.S., so the only classes I need at UTC are either specific to my major or electives. After one year attending this school, I would recommend its B.F.A program for any Tennessee student looking for a tightly run, close-knit, and somewhat competitive program without have to go into massive debt. The faculty are helpful, and they really want to help you develop and grow. It is a small program, but recently it has seen a large number of new students coming in, so it has become more difficult to get into the upper division. You have to work for it. There's a great sense of community in the department as well, which may come from the small size of the school. As far as extra-curricular activities, social life, night life, etc., the school and the city leave something to be desired, but that doesn't bother me. I came here for an education, not to party. If you make yourself some good friends, then you'll be happy enough.Mind you, this has only been my first year at the school, so another review may follow after or near graduation, but I wanted to get the word out about the Studio Art program here. It's solid, and it's worth consideration.
