As with any institution of learning, you get out what you put in. I believe that I have gotten a great education in the time I was here. Not because of the 'mechanical wheels of learning', but rather because of a personal desire to learn. There is opportunity for growth here but it requires a dedicated and motivated individual in order achieve. Of course that is true no matter what university one decides to enroll in.

For those who are interested in coming to the University of Louisville as a grad student I can only provide a cursory overview. Recently the University of Louisville has had a lot of new construction to beautify the campus. Apparently the wife of the Dean convinced him to spend 10 million dollars on making the campus more beautiful, and the effects show. New facilities and research buildings are being constructed that range in the millions of dollars. Some of the facilities are old and should be renovated, however with all of the new construction it may not be an issue in the near future.

The University of Louisville invests heavily into research and offers heavy incentives for anyone who wants to innovate new technologies. The university's research funds have been continuously increasing year after year. It is very easy to get involved as a research assistant here at the University.

Each of the graduate assistant labs are of exceptional quality providing the necessary tools to get projects moving. Graduate projects in robotics, pattern recognition, biometrics, RFID, artificial intelligence, etc are carried out on a daily basis here. Students have the ability to work with expensive sensitive equipment. The new Shoemaker Research Building is a testament to that fact.

As a graduate you are given the freedom to take on individual projects and research instead of taking more classes. This gives individuals the ability to work on real life relevant engineering problems. Herbert Hoover said it best:

There is the satisfaction of watching a figment of the imagination emerge through the aid of science to a plan on paper. Then it moves to realization in stone or metal or energy.

  • Although I have been writing a lot on the Engineering aspect of the university, it should be noted that the medical department is quite popular here. There are a vast range of students who come to the University of Louisville to apply for medical school. The university spares no expense to make sure our facilities for medical researchers, students, and staff are of top quality. I know of many individuals who get a M.D. here and move on to become successful doctors.

Ultimately, the value and worth of a degree depends on how attractive it looks to employers. I can confidently affirm that employers are willing to hire Electrical Engineering graduates from the University of Louisville. In my graduating class I only know of two people who did not have a job offer upon graduation. Shortly after my graduation I have had interview requests by BMW, Raytheon, John Hopkins, GE, Sandia National Laboratories, and more.

I cannot stress this enough, learning is individually based. Many people come to this university not learning because they expect the professors to convey information via osmosis. Learning only comes through hard work and dedicated perseverance toward a subject matter that one is truly interested in.
