I recently applied and was accepted to a summer program at Vanderbilt geared toward bright prospective students. Of course, I was more than happy to attend because Vandy was my first choice. However, Vanderbilt proved itself to be a disgusting institution through the other students attending and its own faculty.

Most students didn't care about the summer work because they were all just trying to secure their spot in the acceptance stack this coming fall. They all took it upon themselves to drink and party almost EVERY night and even came equipped with fake ID's. Basically, if you didn't drink with the others, you had social problems. Also, within a few hours of being there, everything became very cliquish. I've heard that freshman year at Vandy was no less. Even the DEAN admitted that this was a large problem for their freshman.

As for the faculty, unprofessional language was used during lectures and they didn't really care too much about giving you help or getting to know you. They were just trying to sell the school to you so they could get your money. They also didn't care about the whereabouts of the students or what they were doing. It was suggested that we "explore Nashville" instead of doing organized activities. Many of the students took this opportunity to visit a few local bars downtown and come back completely wasted. Also, they were very protective of the school's image. For example, a boy was caught drunk in the dorms and was asked to resign because it would look better on Vandy's record. Also, a group picture of the students that was taken had to be organized by Vandy's creative team. Pretty people were selected to be in the front of the picture while the ugly people and minorities were moved to the back.

This says a lot about Vandy as a whole. The program speaks for students and the operation of the place during the school year. I would definitely not even consider applying after attending the program.

commentSounds like a bitter, awkward high school senior to me.
Drinking in college?! GASP! Who'd think?!
I'm sure you did have social problems, if you sat there and told everyone how awful they acted, which is what this sounds like.
Also, trying to make you be independent?! GASP! No one wants that! Everyone wants to be supervised 24/7 - how dare they give you freedom!
Finally, thank you for not applying. You would have been in my class, and the last thing anyone here wants to see is another winey GDI who continues to drive the fun out of Vandy.
responseThe above comment exemplifies some of the cultural factors that are keeping Vandy from becoming a top-tier school—regardless of how high its SAT scores are.

I'm sure that the OP was much better served by whatever institution she ended up enrolling in.
