Savannah State socially is a great place to be. Especially if your a pretty girl, making and retaining friends is super easy. And yes, like at most HBCU's, the faculty are fairly paternal. That being said, the most dissatisfied students are those who take their education very seriously ,and are not content with "just passing."

Most professors, especially in the liberal arts will be fairly dismissive as to your concerns with grading, assignments, etc. They do not tolerate questioning and are unable to have a reasonable conversation with you about your work without snooty remarks such as

Well, where's your PhD?

It is obvious any concerns are perceived as threats, and most issues have to be resolved through Deans in the departments.

Also, because it is the South you will want to be careful about your manners. I'm an out-of-state student from the West Coast, and never realized how sensitive people can be..Also BE PATIENT! Savannah State moves incredibly slowly, anything you want done takes at least 3-4 hours, especially registration or financial aid, and attitude IS NOT TOLERATED.

Lastly, you WILL NEED A CAR. Savannah has some beautiful beaches, restaurants and shops, downtown is great but they are all MILES AND MILES AWAY. People tend to share their transporation but "hitching rides" is $$$$. Occassionally you get lucky with the bus systems but they are fairly unreliable, about 50% of public transportation is timely, and you will be waiting a while to go anywhere!

P.S.- I took overload schedules both years I attended SSU and NEVER felt challenged. For that reason I am transferring to Emory this fall. It is not normal to get dumber during college, which was my SSU experience. All of the learning I did, was on my own time, in the library.
