I hope I can offset some of these snide and ignorant comments. As a graduate of the 2010 class, and a Dekalb native for 5+ years I am glad to say that I am moving on from Dekalb to pursue graduate level training in Chicago for Psychology. The education/training is the most important part of your college experience and you better hope that you can take something with you (like a diploma) when you leave NIU. The teachers are very helpful and if you play your cards right you can do research with them, go to presentations, get letters of recommendation, and even have dinner with them if you want. The first year living at the dorms is required. It's not the best but get over it, it's like that at any other undergraduate institution across the country. After your first year get an apartment, which quite frankly is much cheaper than living your life away at the dorms eating terrible food. While you are there, try to make some friends because they can become your inner circle. Enjoy your upper level years there, there are many great teachers that will help you excel in your profession. I worked in Alumni Relations and have personally met with Deans from the various Deparments, including Business and Engineering, and there are A LOT of successful NIU alumni who donate tens of thousands of dollars to NIU over the phone on their credit cards every night because they made it in life, and quite frankly I want to be one of those people. Get a car! There are several places you can get food, I recommend duck soup which is an organic food shop which sells amazing, delicious, but healthy products on 1st and Hillcrest. 24 hour I-HOP near Annie Glidden and Lincoln Hwy. Don't drink the water because it is poison! Be careful of fraternities and sororities because they do haze no matter what they tell you. I was in a frat and know all about Greek life. Pledging is the most fun you will never want to have again:) In addition be VERY hesitant to establish housing agreements/leases with these organizations because they will try to take you for a pretty penny. Even though a constructive social stetting is lacking in Dekalb, there are organizations campus wide that you can find including tutoring, going for the free meals at the youth groups both Christian and Jewish, and Job/Internship/Counseling centers. NIU can make or break you. One half of all students that attended NIU either GRADUATE, or FAIL OUT. You can have your cake and eat it too, but spend your time wisely and be on the lookout everyday to make new connections, you will get hooked up and have a great undergraduate training if you allow yourself to do so.
