Major: Communications (This Major's Salary over time)
I was just reading the negative comments and the entire time I'm thinking SIU is a fun and lively institution. The University is always doing things for the students. They have welcome events so you can meet new people the first week your there. They have Family weekend so your family can come down and have fun activities. Since I came here 2.5 years ago, the have built a new football stadium, completely renovated the basketball arena, basically rebuilt the library and put entirely new 1st floor lounges in three of the residence halls. The lounges includes a flat screen tv, pool table and other games, furniture and so much more! Some of the student workers tend to have attitudes. They act like they hate their job but you encounter that at every school. The faculty is generally helpful. If you run into a faculty member that isn't helpful you will run into five more faculty members that are really helpful. There are always sour apples. Advisers tend NOT to advise. I suggest staying in pre-major as long as possible, you will do all the same coursework as students in the major you will just be working with advisers that want to help you. Also, you can easily find someone in your department that is more than willing to help. Advisers expect you to know what's going on before you get to his or her office. If you nag them long enough they will cooperate. The sports here a good. Basketball team was in the Sweet 16 a little while back and we're trying to elevate ourselves to that status again. Football team is great, we were champions of our conference last year! The students tend to be approachable but of course there are people that aren't approachable. Many students who act like they have never seen minorities in their life, but it's not extreme. You can get everywhere in the city in 5 minutes… seriously. Most common places to go: Wal-Mart, the mall (not good at all especially for men), wal greens and the movies. Although the city isn't lively if you get involved in the university you will find a lot of stuff to do. They have fashion shows, greek step shows, plays, musicals, beauty pageants, parties and so much more!If you are religious there are things for you to do as well. There are a lot of religious organizations on-campus. There is generally a Bible study in every building, if not you can start one easily but putting up fliers. The work is semi-challenging overall. It varies by department. In the communication department the coursework isn't meant to challenge you academically. it's centered around practical course work that is very relevant to your career. The department have some of the best faculty members on this campus. All the students say the faculty are very fun and understanding. There are sooo many things to do on campus is insane! there are many leadership opportunities available. I highly recommend SIU to anyone! If you are from big cities it will take some getting use to but most students that are involved on campus don't complain about the city. Overall you make the most out of your education and good luck with your college search.O yea, the on campus dining is great! everyone who moves off campus misses the dining experience. One of the best in the state, and I've been to a lot of schools!
