If you are new to UT Dallas and Dallas, Texas and you are bored and lonely then be sure to click on to the comet calender to look for free social events. UT Dallas offers free events open to students, alumni, and to the public. Sometimes they will hold events that allow you to purchase tickets for a lecture or concert. However, many of their lectures and art openings are free and open to the public at the Johnson Performance Hall, art barn, and CentralTrak locations. Be sure to take advantage of those. And take advantage of the big city of Dallas. It has a lot to offer. Dallas, Texas is probably the best city in Texas. It is far superior to Austin, Texas and other moderate sized Texas cities. Dallas, Texas has an enormous arts scene that so many people are involved with. The Dallas Museum of Art is amazingly huge and world class. The Crow Asian Museum is always free and holds social events for the public every third Friday of each month.Art receptions and exhibition openings occur monthly on dragon street and on Deep Ellum. The top contemporary art galleries on dragon street are Samuel Lynne Galleries, Craig-Head Green, The Cameron Gallery, and HCG Gallery. The MAC (one of the best in Dallas) and The Contemporary Museum of art also hold great social events for adults.Deep Ellum has an annual arts and music festival that is free. Deep Ellum has some excellent grungy nightlife. I suggest The Lizard Lounge (The Church), Purgatory, Excuses Extreme, Viper Lounge, Mokah Art Gallery, Arnetic, The Nightmare, The Prophet Bar, Kettle Art, Hal Samples, Tractor Beam art gallery, and much more. The Bishop arts district is another art district that holds block parties, bazaars, and parades several times a year. They even celebrated Bastille Day and Mardi Gra in 2010. Other excellent contemporary museums are The Valley House Sculpture Garden, The Madi (features contemporary geometric art) and Meadows Museum (they feature Spanish fine art).Cedar Springs road holds an annual Halloween costume block party that is free and open to the public. It is a lot of fun. And a few of the nightclubs do not have cover charges on that night. The citizens of Dallas, Texas even organize a Halloween parade on that road. Cedar Springs also has an annual gay pride parade and festival. The road also has a strip of colorful restaurants and nightclubs. Addison, Texas which is located in north Dallas features World Fest once a year. They also organize Shakespeare festivals (i.e., Shakespeare in the park) and other events (e.g., Oktoberfest). Most of the events are held on Addison Circle. However, Beltline road in Addison has a lot of shopping, bars, comedy clubs, liquor stores, and restaurants to keep everyone entertained and happy. The best shopping can be had at West Village, The West End, NorthPark shopping center, The Galleria Mall, and a variety of other massive shopping centers located around Dallas, Texas. For the holidays the AA Center holds a new years eve party featuring fireworks and live music. The Christopher Martin Art Gallery usually holds a Christmas party which is free and open to the public. If you want to get away for the weekend and relax. Then I suggest white rock lake and Cedar Hill State park (which has some lovely hills and a lake). There is a lot to do in Dallas, Texas. I've only mentioned the tip of the ice burg. Have fun while you are in Dallas! And enjoy your studies at UT Dallas.
