Major: Mechanical Engineering (This Major's Salary over time)
Ok Im going to outline UMBC experience as best I can.

Application Process:

  • They are extremely difficult to get into without prior job experience. I interned for an electrical engineering firm prior to attending UMBC and this definitely helped get me in. I graduated with a 3.14 unweighted. To give you an idea how much this helps, my roommate is a volunteer firefighter, and he interned with Department of Energy during his senior year of highschool. HE GRADUATED WITH 2.7 GPA AND STILL GOT IN!!!!
  • Orientation: Schedule your classes before orientation. When I got to meet with my student advisor I was extremely disappointed. some are simply doing it for the paycheck and have little to no idea what they are doing, while others actually know what you need. Keep in mind that the advisors you meet with ARE STUDENTS, they did not really go through any special training and simply operate based on what they know about the school.

    Campus Life:

  • Some Parties are good and some suck. The newer dorms are really nice whereas potomac and patapsico blow.
  • Basically Res-life is a bunch of chodes. they targetted our room because we had a pot banner on our wall. They actually sniff around from door to door for pot which is totally lame seeing as that's pretty much the only other thing to do here other than drink, workout, and study with other people. Oh and if you are going to smoke, do it off-campus since that's pretty much what they care about. The RA's don't care if you are drunk or high they just don't want you to do it there. Essentially it's a liability thing. They pretty much could care less about sex and actually offer free latex condoms at health services. All in all this is not a party school, its a study school with benefits.

    Food:

  • The food here is meteocre and they only really have decent home-style food when the tours come. To test this theory i spread a rumor amongst the staff that a tour would be coming through in a couple days and lo and behold the food did get better for a day or two. Basically when you tour here, take the goodness of the food and subtract 30%.
  • The teachers are great but avoid Dr.Gloor for Math151 he is terrible, half his class doesn't even show up cuz he's such a bad teacher and would rather spend the extra time to learn it from the book. most of the teachers really care about their students and will help you if you ask them to.
