Date: Dec 01 2010
Major: Sociology (This Major's Salary over time)
Pros:
  • Cheap, Cheap, Cheap
  • Warm weather year round
  • Competent faculty/friendly department staff
  • Administration is tolerable
  • I honestly don't feel like a number
  • University seems to care about you as a student
  • Great libraries/resource availability
  • Campus feels very diverse/cultural
  • Campus and backdrop is beautiful
  • Incredible sunsets
  • Food on campus isn't that bad at all
  • Campus during mornings can smell like fresh tortillas
  • Awesome Rec/Activity Center (free for students)
  • Nice tennis complex/golf course (free for students)
  • The Duck Pond is pretty awesome
  • Cool desert lightning storms
  • Football stadium is open year round, great study spot
  • All sporting events are free to attend with NMSU ID
  • Good course selection in most departments
  • Blending of Native American and Mexican cultures
  • Las Cruces has the best Mexican restaurants in the country
  • Mariachi groups will perform around campus now and then
  • Pretty good mall, and cool bowling alley in Cruces
  • Weather and price deserve to be on here twice
  • Cons:

  • Horrible school spirit
  • Horrible football program
  • School is ideal for commuters (it's a suitcase college)
  • Students are morons, and it's hard to live with
  • These prickly things in the ground that stick to your feet
  • University Avenue and surroudings can be sketchy at night
  • Kids stare, alot. Especially cigarette smokers.
  • You really need a car, even if living in the dorms.
  • School accepts everybody
  • Garcia Hall (Self-Explanatory as a con itself)
  • "Gangster" as a fashion statement amongst students
  • Social life is drinking. And only drinking.
  • NMSU doesn't have its own street with bars and restaurants
  • Las Cruces is losing its small town charm
  • Chain stores are becoming present everywhere
  • "C's get degrees" is popular amongst most students
  • Far too many Criminal Justice majors
  • It's hard to go to a school where morale amongst students is so low because of the silly football team, which leads to a student population that drinks to take away the pain. There are a lot of douchebags from Albuquerque and Colorado who can ruin the experience for me sometimes, but that smell of tortillas on campus keeps me content. Social life aside, I've found the academics to be surprisingly wonderful. Frankly I don't care where NMSU stands academically on US News & Weekly's list, cause what I've learned is rankings don't mean anything. Case and point is an education is what you make of it and NMSU is a good, affordable institution to get an education, with a faculty that cares about you as a student. It is an ideal college to commute to, or to attend for your first two years for cheap. However, if you are like me, and a liberal arts student you'll find that some departments (i.e. Sociology) tend to be primarily online the further up you get. That's what I get for attending an Ag & Engineering school though as a liberal arts student. No complaints with my time spent here however. Las Cruces will always have a special.. yet bizarre.. place in my heart.
