Morehouse College is a business not a school. Though it is rich in history and good intent, the practices of the administration limit the supposed growth and development of the students they enroll. I say this, as a student who suffers from depression and has not received the help truly needed to succeed. The suggest medication and therapy combination and outsource both if you dont feel comfortable with the services they provide. But, the choices given, for me who has a low income, are places in, for lack of a better term "the hood". I have learned from another student who was actually sent to treatment to a place within the city, and the office closed down. He needed a refill, went on calling the school for assistance..all of his calls where forward to voicemail, even the school receptionist had and attitude with him when he continually tried to call. I have called, a few days after I tried to overdose on pills..according to the secretary in the wellness dept that day, there was no one available to speak with, she asked then if it was an emergency. After I said that I had attempted self-harm, but didnt want to bother anyone (thats the type of person I am) her response, was are you sure, not no sir I will transfer you over keep on the line. This shows how they will do minimal work towards aiding you to your goal. The registrar office, another example, did not withdraw my grades from the 2009 fall semester. I had an episode and had to leave school that following semester as an result of my semester. The paper work was filed then. This past semester, after being reinstated, I find I am on probation for grades that should not have been added to my transcript. A whole year later!!. As I tried to resolve the issue, the registrar office played pass the buck and to this day (December 8th 2010) I am fighting to get a hold of someone. Now I do understand my part in this. I should have, on my own, sought help with my depression outside of the meager means given to me by the school, which in turn would have aided my approach in approving my grades. But this highlights the new Morehouse College mentality. Only helping those that seem to be on the right path and letting anyone else fall through the cracks. I would like to say more about the conformist nature they have taken on but am afraid I have already given you a bit to think about.
