I am currently a black female senior at Ouachita Baptist University. I have been at OBU for 3 1/2 years now and they have been the worst years of my life! I am a Psychology major but once was a Biolofy major until one of the professors strongly encouraged me to change because "I would have no chance for Medical School." OBU has made me feel so low until I've gotten to the point where I am just trying to graduate in May so I can start over. If you are black you either have to be an athlete or the "token black girl/boy" to receive respect. There have been numerous times that I have had to just "put up" with the ignorant comments as well as stares. I can honestly say that I have had nothing positive come out of Ouachita Baptist. The cafe's food sucks, and for the tuition to be around $28,000 we should have excellent choices. The student life is not the best, being a southern baptist college it is quite hard to enjoy true college experience with open dorm policies and nothing to do because of the campus rules. If you're pregnant out of wedlock or of a different sexuality, they ask you to leave. I've witnessed many girls leave because of this. I was a honor student in high school and involved in a lot, but here I am looked as an outcast because I won't kiss up to people like they expect me to. The saying Ouachita is what you make it is completely false! Ouachita doesn't includd you in much if you're different, black, than otber students and if they do it is because you are 1 of out 60 black students who they have picked to "draw in the black crowd." If I want to have fun I always have to go to Henderson which isn't right. The list goes on and on with negative things for Ouachita. All I can say is if you are considering enrolling at Ouachita PLEASE weigh your options and consider another school.
