Education Quality: Nursing and education programs are great. Everything else I would consider illegitimate. I got great grades at Southern with little effort… This is because all of the other students are so incompetent that all of my grades were skyrocketed by curves on exams. Although I feel like most of the professors just spew information at you instead of teaching it; there are a handful of professors who are very intellectual and helping.
Social Scene/Surrounding City
First off, I love New Haven. Even though its pretty dangerous, if you stay smart you'll stay safe. Food is great (best pizza in the world),it has great shopping, and it welcomes in many awesome performers and musicians.It's definitely a college town with tons of bars, clubs, and surrounding colleges. (UNH, SCSU, Yale, QU, ect.)Only problem is that I'm not that into the club scene which is the only thing to do. Going to Southern is like hopping into an episode of the Jersey shore. Girls are whiny drunk bitches who think there the shit and most of the dudes are "has-been" jock guidos. Although I do admit that there are a lot of hot girls at southern, there ignorance and arrogance has slowly driven me insane. There are barely any house parties and getting into the dorms can be a pain.
Campus
The campus is alright… Some of the newer buildings are awesome but their appearance gets thrown off by the crappy buildings surrounding them. On campus a lot of buildings are under construction but because of the freeze in funding the construction was halted leaving our campus with half broken down unoccupied eyesores. The dorms are pretty crappy and although I don't live in them, I've heard bad things. The view of West Rock and from the upper levels of the library (which is never open)looking over new haven makes up for a lot of crappyness however.

Overall I don't recommend southern unless your planning on transferring out, just saving money, taking the nursing or education program, or love the clubs. Southern is probably the strongest academically out of the Connecticut state schools… besides Uconn ofcourse… but without New Haven southern would be a very boring place to go to school. I did meet some great people at Southern but am very happy to be transferring.
