I went to MU years ago, so things may have changed a bit. While I agree with some of the negative comments about social life (rich white kids who drink a lot), I really liked Marquette because I looked beyond the core campus life for fun. Milwaukee is a big, interesting city with lots of true American, working class diversity. But you have to get past the dorms to see it. I also found many unique, "alternative" kids there, even if they had to temper their weirdness a bit. In fact, the Jesuit strictness gave us something solid to knock up against, and also set kids up for a the real world, where rules and social mores (and conservatives) do exist.
The courses were challenging and professors interesting, if not totally accessible. The idea at Marquette is that students will pursue knowledge themselves, not be led by the hand to everything.
