My son had the same problem having to pay a second semester that he did not attend…He decided to leave after the Fall semester and transfer to another college that had more to offer for his planned major. IONA held him to the full second semester room and board even though he informed them that he planned to leave while he was still finishing his first. He still left rather than remain and be unhappy. Of the $ 5900 he was on the hook for $1700 is for the meal plan which is just absurd. Anyone planning to apply to IONA must thoroughly understand their unfair policy if you change your mind during the year. And…no this is not the way many other colleges operate. We have spread the word about this policy and everyone we speak to agrees it is unfair and has a negative impact on their decision to apply there. So Parents and future applicants please be aware of IONA's policy if you plan on rooming at IONA or any other college that you apply for. |
Is this still the Policy at Iona, to make a student pay fo a meal plan for the whole year even if they transfer mid year ? |
Major: Other (This Major's Salary over time)
I went to Iona for 1 semester because I changed my major to a program that iona did not have. Because I did not stay a full year, the school made me pay for my room and board for not only the fall semester but also the spring semester, which was ridiculous. They made me speak with 5 different people, each trying to convince me that I should stay and select a different major that their school offered. Each person I spoke to said that they did not want me to lose my money on the spring semester but regardless of what they said I still had to pay thousands of dollars for the spring semester even though I left the school. The social life at Iona is what you make of it. New York city was only a quick train ride away. Most people who dorm at Iona live within 2 hours of the school so on 3 day weekends almost everyone goes home and it could get pretty boring in the dorms but other than that it's a good time. There are no 2 person dorms at Iona. For freshman you will most likely be in an all freshman dorm that has 2 small rooms with 3 people in each room and share 1 bathroom. 6 girls trying to share one bathroom takes some time to get used to. Upperclassmen are put in apartment style suites with around 10 people; the suites have 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a mini kitchen, and also a common/living room. Overall I loved the friends I made at Iona but the faculty was all money hungry.
