I encourage students to get involved in the student branch of the technical societies associated with their major (i.e. AIAA, ASME, IEEE, etc); take on a leadership role for the organization; volunteer to be the project manager for group design projects; attend professional society meetings to network with professionals; work with faculty to ID an undergraduate research topic and write/present a technial paper at a student conference; these are all things in your control. Summer internships, although nice are difficult to obtain, however, making contacts in industry of your choice will help when it comes time for job search.
