WHAT IS WITH THE BAD REVIEWS?

After reading all these bad reviews of NU, I'm ashamed that of saying that these reviewers are my classmates. I am writing as a genuine student. I have been in NU for two years and honestly, the reviews are not true at all. NU has changed in the last decade and has gotten a new president (from Williams College, a top LAC!)

MYTHS

1. Everyone is rich.

NO. About half of NU students' parents earn less than 100k. Many students like me get Pell grants. NU has revised their financial aid policies so that the reviewers saying that NU is unfair are wrong. Guys, they meet 100% need!

2. You don't make close friends.

Do you really think that everyone is going to be the same personality wise? No. It's true that you are isolated during finals week but finals here are no joke! If you don't want to study, don't come here.

People are generally friendly. Join a few clubs so you can become familiar with people. Evanston is close, just invite friends over to eat out. I have grown close to my friends.

******I highly recommend residential colleges. It's a tight knit community that hosts many events like BBQ, events, ice skating etc. You can really familiarize yourself with your dormies. Especially if you are against frats but still want that closeness. Res colleges usually have themes like international or business or arts so it gives you many chances to socialize.

3. Frats/Sororities dominate the social life.

I agree that some people in NU have an over inflated view of frats. And some frats/sororities are really arrogant and seek out the "right people" to fit in. But if you choose the smaller ones, not necessarily the popular ones, they might fit you better.

I personally am NOT in a sorority and am AGAINST greek life so I can't give you my opinion on one.

4. TEachers/CAreer services/counselors are unhelpful and unfriendly.

Untrue. Obviously more people are going to get jobs in Chicago and the midwest but NU has changed a lot in the past decade. I secured both of my internships in the summer in NYC (where I come from). It's true that it might not be JP MORgan or Citibank but this shows that NU is not only regional. It's a national prestigious university. Professors usually have walk in hours so you can ask questions. Some might be intimidating but they are all going to be accomadating so take advantage of that.

Students sometimes seem less intellectual and more GPA focused than I would like, but I feel everyone is here to do well.

I love NU so far. It is definitely NOT like high school which is why so many of these students are complaining. You have to be mature about your studies your life, your goals. IF you are a mature student, you can and will succeed. Northwestern is a very prestigious institution and your employers will know that.
