I am going to be transferring from Mount Holyoke after my first year. While it is an excellent school and many women really find themselves here, it is not the school for me. I was so caught up in the idea of attending Mount Holyoke that I was unprepared for the reality of actually being here.

The campus is breathtaking and extremely safe, which is appropriate because most girls' time is spent on campus. South Hadley is a dreary town. Aside from the village commons, there is nowhere to go and nothing to do. If you don't have a car, you must wait for the PVTA buses and take ridiculously long trips to get to the other towns. While Northampton and Amherst are fun, the rest of the surrounding area is dismal. I would not wish western mass on anyone. It is swarming with drug addicts, crime, and unmotivated losers.

The girls at MHC aren't exactly the geniuses they think themselves to be. I have met some genuinely intelligent women there, but most inanely gossip about one another. While I easily made friends at Mount Holyoke, I did not completely connect with any one of them. I was not sheltered in my upbringing, I did not have a pony, I did not spend every moment of my high school life studying, and I am not gay. While I extended myself to bond with others on their interests, none tried to learn about mine. The social life is present, but mainly in cliques. Meeting guys isn't that big of a challenge. Since I actively pursue my interests off of campus, unlike many Mohos, I had a boyfriend by October of my first year.

Mount Holyoke is not the school for everyone. I could barely stomach a semester before wanting out. Ultimately, it did not offer me what I wanted from college. The liberal arts are no longer applicable in the modern world. I'm transferring to a large university where academics are more structured and areas of study are more focused.

responseI just wanted to say that I love this critique of Mount Holyoke - I find it fair and spot-on, and I particularly agree with you on the intelligence of Mount Holyoke women. We absolutely have genuinely intelligent women, but we also have the women you discuss - and you see them close-up because it is such a small campus. But kudos to your review, you sound extremely mature and intelligent and I hope you found the experience you were looking for when you transferred. It sounds like it wouldn't be hard for you!
questionHi i hope you see this! I am going to attend in the fall (because of all the financial aid they are giving me). I am very much a city girl, and from what I read I am similar to you, and I was wondering how is the transfer process?
