HFCC administration mission statement: ?Students are better seen and not heard.?

I am writing this from a perspective of someone who is currently taking a night-class at HFCC while working a full-time day job, and trying to figure out how to go back to school full time. The administration of this school is very two-faced. Up front they hold seminars for prospective students and its all about why they're the best and how college is possible and they are available to speak to you any time to help you figure things out. Well, forget about it, because after the seminar is over and everyone goes home, you are pretty much left completely on your own.

Counseling office grade: C

The counseling office is helpful on a yo-yo basis meaning one time they are only seeing walk-ins which means you could wait in line for hours with current students. The next time they are seeing people only by appointment. Don't bother arranging time off work just to go there to be told you can't see anyone; make sure you call ahead. Counseling offices should always be available to both walk-ins and by people who need appointments.

The counselors are helpful within their realm of experience, but they can't answer financial aid questions and they don't go out of their way to help you see a financial aid counselor.

Financial Aid office grade: F

If you need to see a financial aid counselor for guidance, forget it. They have that place set up like an uncover operation behind closed doors. You are expected to take a number and sit out in the hall. You are not allowed to proceed into the office without your number having been called. Once in, you walk up to a desk where there is a financial aid technician who is knowledgeable only with assisting current students. They are not prepared to answer questions from prospective students with specific questions. When asked to speak to a financial counselor, the response was,

What is your question?
I had a whole list of questions, and when I tried to ask just one as an example, the technician didn't understand the question. It was clear that this person was not even familiar with the FAFSA website. I left without being able to see a counselor and my questions unanswered. Even though the college lists the phone numbers and emails of the financial aid counselors, don?t bother; you will never be replied to.

In contrast, I was able to visit both Lawrence Tech University and the University of Detroit Mercy on one day and was able to see both admissions counselors and financial aid counselors. In fact, at one of the places, the admissions counselor actually walked me over to the financial aid office. What I spent weeks trying to do at HFCC (with no success) took me just one day at two universities; a difference of night and day.

Another tip to keep in mind, HFCC will tell you that some of their credits transfer to the universities, but be careful. Check with admissions at the university if you think you might want to transfer. A lot of the time it takes two HFCC credits to translate to just one university credit ? so is HFCC really cheaper?

On the one bright spot, the faculty members are great. They are professionals in their field and are very approachable, pleasant and helpful.
